The Brief

Create a magazine for a lifestyle you want to dig deeper into. The magazine will be delivered physically in print, with a page number between thirty and fifty.

Lifestyle of Hip Hop Artists

In this project we were asked to create a magazine about a lifestyle of our choosing. I wanted to communicate the lifestyle of hip hop artists. Breaking down and analyzing their life, music and struggles. My goal was to visualize the artists message through the use of illustrations, handwritten typography, macro-typography, text and pictures.

Research

My process started with obtaining information about visual and editorial design, layout, narrative technique and visual dramaturgy. Exploring what kind of expression I wanted for my magazine, and finding out ways to visually communicate the textual content. I also collected information through interviews, song lyrics, music videos and articles in order to understand the core message for each artist I wanted to write about.

Typography

I often used macro- and micro-typography as a form of illustration that visually represented the meaning of the text. An example of this can be seen in the sampling page. The macro-typography is laid out to illustrate a sheet of notes. Each section of notes represents a song, meanwhile the notes itself represent the samples used in the song. For the heading, I sampled different album covers and used a picture of my handwriting as a mask for the collage.

The Result

A magazine that visualize the message of my favorite hip hop artists through the use of illustrations, handwritten typography, macro-typography, text and pictures. A 29cm by 29cm magazine that emulates a LP filled with handwritten illustrations and typography in order to capture the rawness of the lifestyle, while also making it feel similar to graffiti without making it cliché. I challenged myself to work traditionally, which previously had been out of my comfort zone. This made it possible to put my own personal touch on the design.
